Got Water? Why Water Should Be Your Drink of Choice

Got Water? Why Water Should Be Your Drink of Choice

If you consider that almost 70% of the Earth is covered in water, then why is it that almost half the population drinks less than four cups of water a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention? At least 7% drink no water at all. Getting enough water is essential for life, and not just for when you exercise. Whether or not you don’t want to pay for another beverage at a restaurant, water is crucial to your well-being, and it is free. If that’s not enough to convince you to drink more, consider that water can help you consume fewer calories, too!

Water benefits

Why Water?

Water has been a key component in diets for years, as drinking lots of water helps you to feel fuller longer so you don’t eat as much. Choosing water over sweetened beverages will also keep your calorie intake in check, and drinking cold water can slightly speed up your metabolism due to the increased work your body has to do to warm the water you consumed. Foods that have a higher water content tend to look larger and are absorbed more slowly by the body, making you feel fuller longer.
The benefits of drinking water are numerous and include helping keep you mentally alert, helping to prevent joint pain, avoiding constipation, and fighting infections. Water helps keep your heart healthy, because it helps the heart pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles.
When you are well hydrated, your heart doesn’t have to work as hard. Drinking plenty of water also helps your skin look healthy as opposed to being dehydrated, which makes skin look dry and wrinkled.

How Much Water Should You Drink to Stay Hydrated?

For years it has been said that the average adult should drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day. While that is still a good recommendation, there are other factors to take into consideration, like climate, exercise, how much you sweat, and if you have any illnesses or diseases.  If you’re not sure if you are well hydrated, check the color of your urine. If it colorless or light yellow, then you are drinking enough water; darker yellow often indicates dehydration.

How Can I Drink More Water?

Drinking enough water isn’t that hard. Have a glass with every meal, or add fruits and vegetables to your water, like cucumber, lemon, lime, orange, and even raspberries and strawberries, to give it great flavor. Have a bottle of water on hand everywhere you go, including in the car, at your desk, and in your home, so it’s easily accessible and keeps you from grabbing another drink.
