How much sleep should you really be getting?

Everyone sleeps differently, and some have trouble sleeping at all. Just as there are differing preferences for how much sleep one gets, there are also differing opinions about what should be considered healthy sleep habits. The fact is that there are certain sleep requirements everyone should meet if they want to be truly healthy. So how much sleep do you need? Today, we'll give you some great information that will shed some light on this very important question.

I'm sure that almost everyone has heard that you need eight hours of sleep a night, ideally speaking, but a little less won't hurt. In fact, that's not quite true. Getting less than 6 hours of sleep every night can lead to some unpleasant consequences. Studies have shown that it can increase the risk for obesity as well as high blood pressure. Other studies showed that less than six hours' sleep for individuals over the age of 45 can also increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, and even heart failure.

The ideal amount of sleep falls between seven and a half and 10 hours per night. Just because seven and a half hours falls within the acceptable range doesn't mean you should limit yourself to that. You should always make sure that your body gets as much sleep as it needs. Getting seven and a half to eight hours might be enough on an average night, but if you've had a hard day or been through extra physical activity and are extra tired as a result, go for nine or 10 hours and let your body regain the energy it's lost.

Of course, there are some people who simply have a hard time getting to sleep. There are a few tips that might help you in that department. First, you need to try to sleep at the same time each night. Getting your body on a schedule will help you regulate your sleep cycles. Also, don't consume anything with caffeine after about 2pm. That way, you're sure not to have any in your system at bed time. Finally, never underestimate how beneficial a good massage can be in helping you get better sleep. Therapeutic massage can relax the muscles and the body as well as the mind. One of the best ways to experience this is by using a good massage mat such as the Pranamat ECO. These mats heighten the relaxation and the benefits as well.
