How to choose a yoga mat?


If you're new to yoga and planning to invest in your first yoga mat, it can seem a little daunting as there are so many different types on the market. A yoga mat isn't something you should choose lightly; the wrong one could make it difficult for you to hold poses and really inhibit your ability to relax your mind and body. Here are just a few tips on how to choose a yoga mat that will serve you through many years of practice.

1. What are your comfort levels?

Some yogis like to be able to feel the hard ground during their practice and simply use a yoga mat to improve their grip. Others require a little more thickness in order to avoid putting pressure on bony areas, which can become painful when holding poses for a significant amount of time. Before buying a yoga mat try practicing on towels and experiment with different thicknesses in order to find your preference.

2. Does the mat have enough grip?

A good yoga mat will provide you with a good amount of grip on a wide range of surfaces. Not only should it prevent your body from slipping, but it should provide plenty of grip between the mat and the floor, too. Make sure to consider the type of floors you'll be practicing on in order to decide if the yoga mat you're considering will provide enough grip for you.

3. Is it the right material?

You may also want to consider texture, smell and allergies; some natural rubber mats can have an unpleasantly strong smell whilst some mats made from man-made materials such as plastics can even cause allergic reactions.
